Snehana, also known as Oleation Therapy, is a fundamental Ayurvedic treatment that involves the internal and external application of herbal oils and ghee (clarified butter). This therapy is designed to lubricate and nourish the body, preparing it for deeper detoxification processes such as Panchakarma. Snehana is integral in balancing the doshas, especially Vata and Pitta, and promoting overall health and well-being.
Snehana / Oleation Therapy
Procedure
Snehana can be administered in two primary forms: internal oleation (Snehapana) and external oleation (Abhyanga).
Internal Oleation (Snehapana):
- The individual consumes medicated ghee or oil in gradually increasing doses over a specified period, usually 3 to 7 days.
- The type and amount of ghee or oil are determined based on the individual’s dosha constitution, health condition, and treatment goals.
- During this period, the individual follows a light diet and avoids heavy, oily, or spicy foods to aid digestion and absorption of the oleation.
External Oleation (Abhyanga):
- Warm herbal oils are applied generously to the entire body.
- The massage is performed using specific strokes and techniques tailored to the individual’s dosha and health needs.
- The session typically lasts between 45 minutes to an hour, followed by a period of rest to allow the oil to penetrate deeply into the tissues.
- The therapy often concludes with a steam bath (Swedana) to enhance the absorption and effects of the oil.
